more about this class

Reimagining the Past: Abstract Painting on Vintage Photographs with Alice Wong Join artist Alice Wong from Creative Growth Art Center for a unique workshop that transforms vintage photographs into vibrant, abstract works of art. Using POSCA markers and enamel paint, Wong will guide participants in reinterpreting old images through bold color, fluid mark-making, and expressive abstraction. Through this process, students will explore themes of memory, nostalgia, and transformation, breathing new life into static compositions. Whether obscuring details or enhancing them with vivid hues, this class invites you to experiment with the tension between the familiar and the unknown—turning the past into something entirely new. This is a rare opportunity to learn from a Creative Growth artist, gaining insight into their distinctive approach to art-making and creative expression. Creative Growth Art Center is internationally recognized for supporting artists with disabilities, and Wong’s work embodies the power of art to reimagine the past and create new narratives. Materials: POSCA markers, enamel paint, brushes, and mixed-media paper. Vintage photographs will be sourced by the Creative Growth team, but attendees are welcome to bring their own. BIO: Alice Wong was born in Hong Kong in 1980, and came to Creative Growth in 2003 when she moved to California with her family. Wong concentrated on drawing and ceramics until 2013, when she began painting on vintage photographs using enamel and acrylic markers. Wong has since become known for her photographic transformations. Using blocks of color to enhance or obscure her subjects, an approach reminiscent of Baldessari’s work, Wong forces the viewer to search for contextual clues and meaning by both orienting the viewer and suggesting abstraction. Vividly saturated, Wong’s interpretations of vintage and historical photographs breathe new life into static compositions. With a preference for Victorian and mid-century subject matter, Wong transforms the concept of nostalgia into living documentation.
